Call on your MP to double the number of medical school places

The new workforce census by the Royal College of Psychiatrists has found that over one in twelve consultant psychiatrist posts in the South West are unfilled. This is the tip of the iceberg of the mental health recruitment crisis. That's why the College is asking our members to support a campaign asking the Government to take action.

We're calling on the Governmnet to double the number of medical school places available by 2029 and for every local area to publish a mental health workforce strategy to reduce their vacancy rate, retain staff and create the new roles needed to fulfil the Government's promises on mental health. We’ve calculated that we’ll need to have 15,000 students beginning medical training every year to ensure that we have enough psychiatrists coming through the pipeline to meet growing need, reduce vacancy rates and replace psychiatrists approaching retirement. As a psychiatrist working in RCPsych’s South West division we would like you to send an email to your local MP asking them to support the campaign.

We know how busy our members are so wanted to make it as easy as possible. All you need to do is enter the postcode of your workplace below and it will bring up an email ready for you to the local MP.

MPs often find emails from professionals living in their constituency very influential so please give it a try.
